Vietnam welcomed 1,722,249 arrivals for the first 6 months of 2005 According to VNAT, Vietnam received 309,151 foreign visitors in June, which brings the total number of visitors for the first 6 months of the year to 1,722,249, increasing 23.7% in comparison with 2004’s.
Among this total number of visitors, only 1,027,229 visitors came for tourism purpose (59.64%), which represents an increase of 40.4% compared to the same period last year. |

Asian highway agreement takes effect
The Intergovernmental Agreement on the Asian Highway Network came into force on July 4, 2005.
The agreement aims to complete 141,000 km of standardised roadways spanning 32 Asian countries with linkages to Europe.
Vietnam to start Greater Mekong transport deal in 2007 Vietnam will carry out a transport agreement among six Greater Mekong countries in 2007 that will allow vehicles from the involved countries to operate on a certain number of Vietnam roads.
The agreement will boost regional passenger and freight transportation among Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, China and Vietnam.
Ancient Hue receives US$3.5 million for preservation The Ministry of Culture and Information, the Hue Ancient Capital Relic Preservation Center, and the World Heritage Institute of Waseda University, Japan, agreed on a project to study and preserve the ancient quarter in Hue in 2005-2008 at a total cost of US$3.5 million.

Con Dao Island moves to develop ecotourism Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province hopes to turn Con Dao Island into one of the most attractive ecotourism spots in Vietnam.
Con Dao is accessible by international sea routes linking it to the north Asian countries of Japan, the Republic of Korea and China and Southeast Asian countries of Singapore, Indonesia and Thailand.
Nowadays, visitors can come to Con Dao, which is more than 180km from Vung Tau, by ship or by plane. The recent inauguration of the Co Ong Airport has helped attract more holidaymakers to the island.
